The Global Health Research Collaborative of the Wayne State University School of Medicine will present a series of Zoom presentations and panel discussions on global health issues beginning July 22.

The presentations, open to everyone, will tackle topics such as “COVID-19: Long COVID-19 and Future Pandemics” and “Tackling Health Challenges in Ukraine and Ukrainian Refugees,” along with panel discussions on emergency medicine, refugee trauma research, breast cancer research in African American populations, and conducting effective collaborations with international organizations.

The Friday series is a component of the 2022 session presented by the collaborative, which seeks to expand quality global health education to local and foreign professionals early in their careers. The program works to develop a network of highly-trained global health researchers who will conduct research aimed at improving the health, capacity development, and evaluation and monitoring of evidence-based interventions for health problems in their own nations.

You do not have to be enrolled in the program to participate in the sessions.

July 22, 11:35 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: “COVID-19: Long COVID-19 and Future Pandemics.” Join an engaging conversation with leading COVID-19 experts from the city of Detroit as they dissect their experiences leading their health care and academic institutions’ response during the pandemic. They will place the discussion in the context of the evolving roles of researchers and health care providers’ careers. Participants include Teena Chopra, M.D., M.P.H., professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Disease, for the School of Medicine, corporate medical director of Infection Prevention, Epidemiology and Antibiotic Stewardship for WSU and the Detroit Medical Center and co-director of Wayne State University’s Center for Emerging and Infectious Diseases; Marcus Zervos, M.D., assistant dean of Global Affairs for the School of Medicine and co-director of the Center for Emerging and Infectious Diseases; Anita Chopra, M.D., an internal medicine physician at the University of Washington Medical Center and member of the long covid center at UW Medicine; and Uzma Syed, D.O., board certified infectious disease specialist of Southshore Infectious Disease and Travel Medicine Consultants, and chair of the COVID-19 Task Force and director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence for Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in New York.

July 29, 10 to 11 a.m.: “Global Perspectives Panel.” Participants and topics include Arash Javanbakht, M.D., WSU associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, and director of the Stress, Trauma and Anxiety Research Clinic, who will focus on the importance of refugee trauma research. Evelyn Jiagge, Ph.D., a research specialist at Henry Ford Hospital, will focus on breast cancer research in African American populations. Indryas Woldie, M.D., WSU assistant professor of Oncology and Hematology, specialist at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, will focus on conducting effective collaborations with international organizations.
